Parade of Friendly Monsters

Community parade to celebrate the cultural diversity of Deptford High Street in London.
2019 | Deptford X, London, UK.
Celebrating the diverse cultural heritage of Deptford through a community parade.
Commissioned as part of the 2019 Deptford X Festival, funded by an Arts Council National Lottery Project Grant.
Building on the work of artist Phoenix Fry, we devised free drop-in workshops to guide participants from different communities in designing and creating their own customs for our collective parade. The workshops were designed as an exercise of identity and self-expression, celebrating the diverse cultural heritage of Deptford High Street in London, and the area's connection to artists and creators.
The masquerade parade registered around 300 participants marching through the streets of Deptford. A whirlwind of masks, fur, dancers, drums, pompoms and more.
Collaborators that joined the parade include: Horniman Museum, IRIE! Dance Theatre, Goldsmiths’ Confucius Institute, Artmongers, Heart n Soul, Deptford’s VietSchool, brass marching band Les Zoings, and Bear Cubs, among residents of the Deptford area.
