2019 | Deptford X, London, UK.

Celebrating the diverse cultural heritage of Deptford through a community parade.

Building on the work of artist Phoenix Fry, we devised free drop-in workshops to guide participants from different communities in designing and creating their own customs for our collective parade. The workshops were designed as an exercise of identity and self-expression, celebrating the diverse cultural heritage of Deptford High Street in London, and the area's connection to artists and creators.

The masquerade parade registered around 300 participants marching through the streets of Deptford. A whirlwind of masks, fur, dancers, drums, pompoms and more.

Documentation of the parade, 3 November 2019.

Collaborators that joined the parade include: Horniman MuseumIRIE! Dance TheatreGoldsmiths’ Confucius InstituteArtmongersHeart n SoulDeptford’s VietSchool, brass marching band Les Zoings, and Bear Cubs, among residents of the Deptford area.

Commissioned as part of the 2019 Deptford X Festival, funded by an Arts Council National Lottery Project Grant.
